The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
