Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
